Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a more technical procedure which requires additional training and skill. Laparoscopic surgery consists of making several small incisions in the abdominal wall. The tip of a Laparoscope, a long flexible tube connected to a video camera, is inserted into one of the incisions. Through the other incisions, the surgeon will insert other special instruments, and using a video monitor, will guide these instruments to hold, cut, suture or staple inside the body. Once the surgery is completed, these small incisions are sutured closed.

Benefits to Laparoscopic surgery include:

  • Smaller surgical scars
  • Reduced blood loss during surgery
  • Less pain following surgery
  • Faster return to normal activity
  • Reduced risk of infection

Laparoscopic Procedures

  • Laparoscopic Nissan Fundoplication for Acid Reflux (GERD)
  • Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (Removal of the Gallbladder)
  • Laparoscopic Hernia Repair (Incisional and Inguinal)

Single-Site Laparoscopic Surgery

Middle Tennessee Surgical Specialists is now offering single-site laparoscopic cholecystectomy to qualifying patients. Single-site surgery is often referred to as "scarless surgery" because rather than multiple incisions in the abdomen, a single incision is made at the umbilicus. This offers improved cosmesis to those patients who desire this approach. All of our surgeons are currently trained and credentialed to perform this procedure.
